The Old Clock Tower. Middlesbrough.

The Old Clock Tower. Middlesbrough.

Water tower and clock tower, c.1870 possibly by Philip Webb. Used as water tower for water accumulators or reservoirs for maintaining hydraulic pressure to dockside cranes and dock gates; also used as navigational aid on River Tees. Red engineering brick with red sandstone and terracotta dressings. Welsh slate roof on clock tower. 4-storey, 3 x l-bay water tower, supports 2-stage clock tower. (South) entrance front has moulded plinth, and central slightly-projecting porch with renewed boarded door and fanlight, now boarded up; moulded imposts, keystones and shaped moulded cornice. Windows, blind in end bays, and round-headed on 3rd floor, in 4-storey round-headed recesses with shaped keystones under continous hoodmould. Altered casements, moulded sills and panelled aprons. Entablature, with fluted console brackets in frieze, below parapet with balustraded panels, and raised pedestals between bays and at angles. Square
clock tower has ogee-stop-chamfered angles, above short angle buttresses with inverted scrolled brackets. Round-headed doorways in east and west faces of otherwise plain lower stage. Modillioned cornice between stages. 2nd stage has keyed oculi, holding clock faces on 3 sides, below frieze, dentil cornice and lunettes. Turned post finial on short chamfered pyramidal spire, sprocketed at eaves.
Returns of water tower have similar recessed windows.
Rear similar to entrance front, with blind doorway. Rear of clock tower shows patterned brickwork in blind oculus.
INTERIOR retains 2 large cast iron tanks which once held the water that provided the hydraulic pressure which operated the lock gates and other dock machinery.

The Magic Of November

The Magic Of November

I can't believe how lucky I am. I was sitting at work today and noticed the light coming through the window blinds was getting better and better. Looking out, I saw the clouds were just brilliant. "This is going to be a fantastic sunset I said to a colleague of mine". He just shrugged. "You and your sunsets...".

Leaving work at 4 pm I rushed to my favorite location getting there just in time. And on time I was. This is by far the greatest sunset I've ever witnessed at this location. Fantastic light which just kept on changing. It felt like the sunset would last forever (and I wish it would have).

Being pretty familiar with a location allows me to work fast, which I really had to do since I wanted to get as much shots in before it was over. When it all was over, I had shot over 250 frames. The number was unusually high actually, but in addition to the light being so great, I didn't feel like I had the time to pull out my filters. Thus I had to do brackets.

When working under conditions such as this you get a feeling that you are blessed. That you are lucky to experience this. Lucky to be alive. All other stuff in life suddenly becomes rather dull and unimportant. It allows you to stress down while looking at the marvels of mother earth and sky.

Hm, that was a rather long description, but I really had a lot to say today :)

Number two in the "November at Rosholm" series. So far I've done Nov 1st and Nov 3rd. Both with terrific results and amazing displays of light.

Thank you for looking and thank you for supporting my work.
